Vascular surgeons need to embrace changes in the perioperative management of open aortic surgery
I have the privilege of serving on the Society for Vascular Surgery Document Oversight Committee (DOC). When the DOC reviewed the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) manuscript addressing open aortic surgery,1 I was shocked by many of its recommendations. Avoid preoperative overnight fasting and encourage clear fluids up to 2  hours, and light foods up to 6 hours, before induction of general anesthesia? Give patients without diabetes a preoperative carbohydrate drink? (a diet Pepsi? a chocolate milkshake?) Avoid routine use of postoperative nasogastric (NG) tubes after extubation? Not so fast.

Excess weight in adolescents and associated factors: data from the ERICA study
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of excessive weight among the school adolescents studied is high, with a value higher than the national average and the results of previous studies with adolescents. Its distribution is associated with different factors, which are socioeconomic, demographic, biological, and related to lifestyle, reinforcing the complexity of this condition, which deserves a broad coping approach, involving not only individual efforts but social and public ones as well.PMID:33775630 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.02.008
